News advisory - Union members picket Petro-Canada to support locked out Montreal workers

Nov 20, 2008 4:37:00 PM

TORONTO, Nov. 20 /CNW Telbec/ - Members of Canada's largest energy workers' union are picketing selected Petro-Canada gas stations across Ontario and the country on November 21st and 22nd, in support of locked-out workers at the Montreal refinery. Members of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union in Ontario are standing shoulder to shoulder with their brothers and sisters in Quebec.

Petro-Canada locked out 260 workers of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union (CEP) on November 17, 2007, refusing to give them the same contract it has already agreed to with its workers in other provinces. The CEP has declared November 21st and 22nd National Days of Action and urges motorists to boycott Petro-Canada gas stations until the end of the lockout.

"With record profits, this lock-out is not about money. Canadians know that oil and gas companies aren't hurting right now," says CEP Ontario Region Vice-President President Bob Huget. "This is an attempt to break the union - in particular pattern bargaining and fair treatment in the energy sector."

Over the last year, Petro-Canada has been found guilty of operating using illegal scabs, of intimidating and threatening workers, and of ignoring orders to return to the bargaining table and negotiate in good faith. The Quebec Ministry of the Environment, the Workers Health and Safety Commission and the City of Montreal have launched inquiries about disturbing safety and environmental incidents. "We will stand by our 260 colleagues for as long as it takes. We demand that Petro-Canada return to the bargaining table and negotiate a fair settlement immediately."
