Illuminated star necklace may present a choking hazard

Nov 20, 2008 3:00:00 PM

TORONTO, Nov. 20 /CNW/ - SickKids Foundation would like to inform parents of children who received illuminated star necklaces at the Toronto Santa Claus Parade or pre-parade breakfast at Yonge-Dundas Square of a potential choking hazard associated with the product. The necklaces were distributed at the breakfast and by celebrity clowns along the parade route.

If you or someone you know has an illuminated star necklace, please destroy and discard it. Used incorrectly, the promotional piece may break apart, and the small pieces could present a choking hazard. We want to assure parents that there have not been any reported incidents involving the necklace.

"We sincerely apologize to children and families for any inconvenience this might cause and appreciate your understanding," said Michael O'Mahoney, president of SickKids Foundation. "The Foundation had the necklace prototype approved prior to purchase. The necklaces distributed on the weekend were unfortunately not retested to ensure they continued to meet safety standards."

"Everything we do at SickKids Foundation first and foremost is focused on ensuring the safety and health of our children," O'Mahoney emphasized. "As soon as we received a complaint, we moved to have the necklaces recalled. As a hospital foundation devoted to the health and well-being of children, we will not take the risk of potential harm to children from any product distributed on our behalf."

Parents who have any concerns are asked to call Rhoel Patag at 416.813.6166, ext. 1373.
